Retooling allows players to customize recent crafts, usually by changing their short and long descriptions, at a cost of a number of credits.

The short description is how the item appears in your inventory: "a blank art canvas", for example.

The long description is what you see when you look at the item.

Many items produced by the crafting system are retoolable by default, but not all of them. You can figure out what can and cannot be retooled and for what price with the retool <target> command. You can also see this information by holding an item and using the assess <target> command.

Do make sure to retool items shortly after you make them, because any reboot of the game will remove the retoolable flag!

Syntax

The actual syntax to retool is: retool <target> <field> <text>.

For example:

retool canvas short_description a painting of a beautiful sunset retool canvas description This painting depicts a beautiful sunset on Artemis in a wash of spectacular shades, all red and gold.

You can add color codes to both short and long descriptions, but be careful - any words in your new short description that have color codes won't be usable as keywords. So if you put color in the word 'painting' in the shortdesc, look painting wouldn't work! Look canvas still would, though, as retooled items do keep the keywords of their initial template.

Rules

When retooling, you must respect the essence of the craft. Changing a craft from iron to copper, for example, is forbidden.

Adding minor embellishments is allowed, as long as the material is realistic to have at hand for your character. For example, if you make a desk, and you want to line the insides of it with cloth, make sure the cloth would be readily available and, if so, that is allowed. A polyester woven to look like satin makes sense given what materials we have on Artemis - a silk velvet would be probably impossible to justify without silkworms!

Changing the craft in its entirety is forbidden. You shouldn't retool a desk into a piano just because both are large items made of wood.

When retooling something, you must always consider if there are other crafts that fit your requirement and plan better. For example, instead of retooling a bed into a chaise lounge, you should use the sofa recipe. If you're not sure about your retool choice, it's okay to ask staff via a wish or ticket if you need guidance on the closest possible recipe.

Tips and Tricks

  • Always check cost before you go ahead. A lot of items are highly costly to retool, and the cost varies tremendously between items.
  • Relatedly, ALWAYS proofread your descriptions very carefully, because you can only retool once!
