Quickstart Guide to Playing
This is a guide containing many of the commands you will use to play Untold Dawn.
Basic Movement
To move around, you can type the cardinal direction you which to move through. A room may have any one (or multiple) cardinal directions available to move through. North, south, east, west, northwest, southwest, northeast, southeast, up, and down. For example:
north n southwest sw down d
Look
It's important to know that you can look at the room, and you can look at objects or characters. (Help:Look)
look (or l) - look at the room you are standing in
look <target> - look at the object or character you desire
look look man look east look me
Emoting
Emoting is the most important aspect of roleplay. In Untold Dawn, you can emote both in speech and out of it. (Help:Emote)
The targetting style for emotes is inspired by the same emoting style in other games such as Armageddon MUD. You can emote like this:
emote smiles. Others will see: The newbie smiles.
emote smiles at ~man. Target will see: Newbie smiles at you.
emote With a grin, @ nods at ~man. Target will see: With a grin, the newbie nods at you.
You can also emote in speech, with the following syntax:
say (with a broad gesture) Welcome to Artemis! tell man (pointing a finger south) The cryo-pods are that way.
Or, if you want to write a longer emote with speech, you can work speech in:
emote Shrugging, @ smiles at ~woman. "Nice to meet you too, I suppose," he says, shaking ^woman hand. Target will see: Shrugging, the newbie smiles at you. "Nice to meet you, I suppose," he says, shaking your hand.
Here is a reference list for targeting different pronouns in emotes (credit to ArmageddonMUD):
<Symbol Reference Target Sees
------ --------- -----------
~ (sdesc) you
! him/her/them you
% (sdesc)'s your
^ his/her/their your
# he/she/they you
These symbols are code-supported but not currently functional.
& himself/herself/themself yourself
= (sdesc)'s yours
+ his/hers/theirs yours
Describing Your Character
After you go through chargen, you will be able to set a short description and your main description.
You set your main description with the describe command, which allows you to enter a single paragraph of text describing your character as a whole. This replaces the old "bodyparts" system for the moment - disregard any instructions you see related to that!
Do include:
- Things people could see at a look (height, coloration, build, etc.)
- Color in moderation, if you want! (see Color)
Don't include:
- Clothing (that's covered by physical objects in the game)
- Anything that wouldn't be visible on a look, such as details about voice - see below!
Here is a sample description:
Petite in stature, this woman possesses a fair complexion. Auburn hair falls in a neat braid to a slender waist, framing a heart-shaped face with defined features. Amber eyes with thick lashes rest above a small straight nose. Still further, full lips with a defined cupid's bow transition into a pointed chin and an elegant throat. Rounded shoulders lead into athletically muscled arms and diminutive wrists. Her hands are smooth, bearing callouses on the tips of her fingers, nails unadorned with polish and shaped into careful ovals. A moderate bust leads into a flat abdomen and rounded hips. Athletically slim, her legs are well-muscled, thighs and calves firm with exercise.
Postures
Postures are how you can pose your character in a room. See Help:Stand or 'help stand' in game to view this helpfile while you play.
Syntax: <position> <optional modifier> <optional target> <optional text>
- Positions Available: stand, stand at ease, stand at attention, squat, sprawl, slump, sit, prostrate, prone, lie, lounge, lean, kneel
- Modifiers Available: in, on, under, before, behind, around.
- Targets Available: If you specify a modifier, you must specify a target.
- Optional Text: You can add extra text at the end to further flavor your posture.
The DEFAULT modifier is by, so if you don't specify a modifier the game will supply by.
Examples:
stand Cameron You stand by Cameron. sit on sofa You sit on a large turquoise-colored L-shaped sofa. sprawl on sofa staring up at the ceiling You sprawl out on a large turquoise-colored L-shaped sofa, staring up at the ceiling. stand near a wall, with arms tightly crossed You stand, near a wall, with arms tightly crossed.
Voice Customization
You can set the sound of your voice with the VOICE command. Talking after customizing your voice will add the descriptor words you choose each time. See Help:Voice for more details.
- voice range <range> - Set your vocal range.
- voice accent <accent> - Set the geographic or cultural reference for your accent.
- voice adjective <adjective> - Sets an arbitrary adjective for your voice.
Your QC Chip
The Quantum Communications chip (which was implanted upon your acceptance to the Artemis program) allows you to access the QC network, a low-level augmented reality network. There are various software in the QC chip and you can access their respective helpfiles through the following commands:
- qc group help - Group management.
- qc wallet help - Currency wallets.
- qc time - Shows the current game time.
See Help:QC for more details.
Your QC chip also enables the use of the Personal Network, an in-game and fully IC 'global' chat.
See Help:PN
Relationships
Overwhelmed by the idea of remembering all these character names in game? Have no fear, the relationship command is here! (Help:Relationship) You can assign an alias for another character and add notes about your character's relationship with them using the following commands:
- relationship <target> - Shows the relationship between you and the target.
- relationship <target> aka <name> - Sets an alias for the character.
- relationship <target> notes <note> - Sets a note for the character.
